There’s been a whole galaxy of LEGO Star Wars May the 4thfreebies over the years, so here’s the full rundown on every promotional item to date.
The LEGO Star Wars theme celebrates its 25thanniversary in 2024, with a variety of new sets, GWPs, offers, deals and Insiders rewards all centred around this year’s May the 4th(Star Wars Day) event. It’s a major milestone indeed and it’s a quarter of a century birthday that the LEGO Star Wars theme also shares with The Phantom Menace.
One of the key highlights of May the 4thfor fans are the exclusive promotional items that accompany the event, which usually include exclusive builds and special collectibles that are only available for a limited time.
The LEGO Group and Lucasfilm kicked off what would become the very first LEGO Star Wars Day in 2009, although a lot has changed since then. So join us as we take a look back at all of the highly-desirable May the 4thfreebies that have been made available since then, culminating in everything that will be up for grabs in 2024.
May the 4th 2009 – 2012
The first LEGO Star Wars Day was a surprisingly low-key event and wasn’t even given that title, opting instead for May the Fourth be With You day. However, it did coincide with the theme’s 10thanniversary and to celebrate fans were able to get hold of a free numbered poster that was limited to just 15,000 copies worldwide.
That was then followed in 2010 by a free LEGO Star Wars minifigure sticker sheet, although the promotional item could only be secured by VIP members. In addition, a special sweepstake gave US and Canadian VIPs a shot at securing one of two solid bronze Boba Fett minifigures.
2011 became the first official LEGO Star Wars Day, also offering up a limited edition numbered poster and what would be the first ever exclusive May the 4thminifigure GWP.4649858 Shadow ARF Trooper is highly sought after on the secondary market and is also unique in that the character has never appeared in any other Star Wars media so far.
Fans were given two polybag GWP treats in 2012 in the shape of 8028 TIE Fighter and 6005192 TC-14, alongside the 5001162 LEGO Exclusive R2-D2 poster, which was released to promote the then-new Ultimate Collector Series 10225 R2-D2.
May the 4th 2013 – 2016
2013’s GWP polybag offering proved to be somewhat controversial with a few fans as5001621 Han Solo (Hoth) boasted a screen-accurate brown coat, rather than the traditional blue seen in previous sets such as 7879 Hoth Echo Base. Also up for grabs this year was a free limited editionLEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles poster, but the less said about that, the better…
Fast forward to 2014 and yet another much sought after GWP polybag arrived in the form of the exclusive5002123 Darth Revan. The character first appeared in the Knights of the Old Republic game and has never been included in any LEGO Star Wars set to date. Those who missed out on the minifigure would have to settle for aLEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles poster once again.
A combination of a minifigure and poster offerings also popped up in 2015, when fans could get hold of a free Admiral Yularen polybag, marking the debut of one of the more obscure LEGO Star Wars characters. In addition, one of six free collectible posters were released each day over six consecutive days, featuring a LEGO version of the movie one sheets for Episodes I through VI.
With the arrival of The Force Awakens the previous year, 2016’s promotional freebies were very much based around the first instalment of the sequel trilogy. The 30602 First Order Stormtrooper minifigure polybag was the main draw, which was accompanied by free The Force Awakens and The Battle of Hoth posters.
May the 4th 2017 – 2020
The May the 4thevent in 2017 was a surprisingly low-key affair, which just one LEGO Star Wars GWP available to mark the occasion. Fans were only able to pick upthe 30611 R2-D2 polybag, which featured a mid-scaled 70-piece brick-built version of everyone’s favourite Astromech droid.
Jumping through hyperspace to 2018 saw Star Wars Day celebrated in true style once more, with the LEGO Group offering upa 40288 BB-8 polybag and 75181 Y-wing Starfighter print, with the latter only being available for lucky LEGO VIP black card holders.
With the LEGO Star Wars theme going all out for its 20thanniversary in 2019, fans were presented with a trio of promotional treats.40333 Battle of Hoth – 20th Anniversary Edition was the very first boxed set released to celebrate May the 4thand the model was accompanied by a 20th Anniversary Edition sets poster for VIPs, as well as an in-store mini Tantive IV make and take model.
2020 saw yet another exclusive boxed build in the shape of 40407 Death Star II Battle, one of only a few LEGO Star Wars sets to focus on the Empire’s second battle station. Also up for grabs as a GWP polybag was 30383 Naboo Starfighter, with VIPs able to enter a sweepstake for a limited edition white Boba Fett minifigure and rare uncut/numbered sticker sheet from 2010’s event.
May the 4th 2021 – 2024
The microscale40451 Tatooine Homestead and 30388 Imperial Shuttle polybag arrived for May the 4thin 2021, as well as a free sticker sheet to celebrate Lucasfilm’s 50thanniversary. VIPs could also exchange some of their accumulated points to be entered into a sweepstake to win a signed and sealed Dutch Vander minifigure.
Aunt Beru made her minifigure debut as part of40531 Lars Family Homestead Kitchen in one of 2022’s promotional sets, alongside the 30495 AT-ST polybag and a unique 5007403 The Mandalorian Beskar Keyring. As an extra incentive, VIP members were offered physical and digital 75341 Luke Skywalker’s Landspeeder UCS prints and the chance to win books signed by C-3PO actor, Anthony Daniels.
Last year’s promotional items were the most extensive up until that point, with the highlights being40591 Death Star II, 30654 X-wing Starfighter polybag and 5007840 Return of the Jedi 40th Collectible. A free digital X-wing poster was also available, as well as enticing VIP sweepstakes to win a signed 75252 Imperial Star Destroyer and an ultra-rare sterling silver R2-D2.
That brings us up to 2024 and this year’s bumper crop of LEGO Star Wars May the 4thpromotions. Free GWP items available from next week (while stocks last) include 40686 Trade Federation Troop Carrier, 500818 Battle of Yavin and 30680 AAT. Insiders will be able to grab a unique and exclusive minifigure Art Print and LEGO Star Wars Collectible Coin from May 1 and more items may be revealed once the event kicks off.
LEGO Stores are also getting in on the action, with free brick-built figures of Darth Vader and Princess Leia available at make and take events on May 4 and May 5.
In addition, some third party retailers are offering their own LEGO Star Wars May the 4thfreebies, such as 30685 TIE Interceptor at Smyths Toys, a metal logo keychain from at least one UK retailer, Intertoys and JB Spielwaren, with the latter also offering customers a 25thanniversary notebook.
