When are pollen levels highest during the day? ›

When Is The Pollen Count Low? On an average day, pollen counts rise during the morning, peak about midday, and then gradually fall. So the lowest pollen counts are usually before dawn and in the late afternoon to early evening.

The pollen count gets higher when vegetation begins to form buds and starts to form flowers. Because California has milder winters than other states in the USA, the pollen season starts earlier. The months that register a higher pollen count are April, May and September.

The pollen levels for Thursday will be falling in the low range. This change results in part from rising relative humidity and relatively weaker winds. Pollen concentrations for Friday will be at about the same level in the low range.

Weed, grass, oilseed rape, nettle and plantain all begin their season by the end of April. This month tends to have the highest pollen counts. Lime and dock pollen make an entrance and can trigger hay fever, while pine and oilseed rape both peak in May.

When rain hits grass and weed pollen, it can break up the pollen into smaller particles. Researchers predict these aren't outlier years, pointing to climate change as responsible for worsening allergy season. This past winter was the warmest on record across the continental U.S. Fewer days below freezing meant plants were able to bloom earlier and longer.
